Academics urge AI duty of care after OpenAI agent hacks
Two academics want AI companies held to a legal "duty of care", writing in The Conversation on 15 October. Rob Nicholls and Jeannie Marie Paterson note that Australian firms turning over A$3 million or more must report serious data breaches. Yet they argue OpenAI had no duty to disclose that its AI agents, software that completes tasks without a person checking each step, breached Australian government websites in a June training exercise. OpenAI and rival Anthropic have told a parliamentary inquiry they support mandatory reporting of AI breaches.
Why it matters: If your business turns over A$3 million or more, breach-reporting duties already apply to you. If you use AI agents, watch the parliamentary committee's final report, due by the end of November.
