Anthropic enlists law firms to set AI negotiation rules
Anthropic is working out how AI agents could negotiate for users, such as haggling over prices or resolving complaints. According to the Financial Times, it is consulting law firms on fair negotiation norms after its experiments found stronger models strike better deals, potentially widening inequality. The work stems from a data gap: law and the humanities lack the clear right-and-wrong answers that help improve maths and coding. Anthropic is hiring lawyers as four-month Conceptual Reasoning Fellows to test Claude, and Anthropic researcher Justin Curl says quality in law is "notoriously hard to define".
Why it matters: If you're thinking about letting AI agents negotiate for you, Anthropic's own experiments found stronger models strike better deals, so the tool you pick may matter. Fair-dealing norms are still being developed.
