Anthropic hires fewer junior technical staff as AI agents grow

Anthropic's share of junior staff in technical roles fell from 21 percent to 14 percent since early 2025, according to an internal study the AI company published. Among new technical hires, the junior share dropped from 27 percent to 9 percent. Anthropic credits its AI agents, which by August 2026 were logging six times as many work hours as human employees. The company reports productivity gains across departments, such as 5.1 times as many engineering code commits, but says it is a special case that does not map easily onto the wider economy.

Why it matters: If you're considering AI in place of junior hires, note Anthropic's own study says its results may not carry over to your business. Test tools on your own workload before cutting entry-level roles.
