Microsoft exits Nscale's Essex AI datacentre over power
Microsoft has pulled out of a planned AI datacentre at Loughton, Essex, being built by UK firm Nscale, according to The Guardian. The Telegraph first reported the deal's end, which leaves Nscale without its only publicly announced customer for the site. UK Power Networks has told Nscale it cannot supply enough power to the site until the early to mid-2030s. Nscale says it remains committed to Loughton and is exploring alternative power, and that its Microsoft ties remain strong.
Why it matters: This is a UK project, so it doesn't directly affect Australian services. Still, if your business relies on an AI provider, it's worth asking whether its service depends on datacentre capacity that is still being built.
